Wisconsin became a United States Territory by act of congress in 1836 and gained statehood in 1848. Early settlers were lead miners who came from all over the Europe and the United States. Miners took shelter in the holes they dug to mine the lead. The miners were called badgers thus leading to the state’s nickname – The Badger State.
The Republican Party was born in Wisconsin by anti-slavery activists after the Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled the Fugitive Slave Law, a law which allowed runaway slaves to be capture and returned to their owners, unconstitutional.
Wisconsin emphasized service to the state’s people as a part of the education philosophy early in the 20th century. The University of Wisconsin and Wisconsin Technical College have multiple campuses around the state. There are also many private colleges and universities located in Wisconsin.
The National Football League’s Green Bay Packers, located in Green Bay, are the only American football team owned by a publicly held nonprofit organization. The Packers are the third oldest franchise in the league, and the team has won 13 league championships.
The Milwaukee Brewers are members of the National League and play baseball in Miller Park. The Brewers have only won one championship title. The year was 1982 and the team was a member of the American League at the time.
The Milwaukee Bucks won a National Basketball Association title in 1971. The teams plays in the Bradley Center.
Manufacturing, especially paper products and processed foods, make up a large part of the state’s manufacturing segment, as do consumer goods. Manufacturers such as John Deere, Briggs & Stratton, Harley-Davidson and Kohler, as well as many others, dot the state. Technology, healthcare and tourism round out the major segments of Wisconsin’s economy.
The state celebrates its multicultural heritage with numerous festivals throughout the year.Oktoerfest, Festa Italiana, Irish Fest, Polka Days are just of few of the events.
The state is a leading dairy producer (e.g., butter, milk and cheese) and is famous for the production of cheese. Approximately one quarter of the cheese in America comes from Wisconsin. Major crops include: corn, cranberries, ginseng, snap peas, oats, potatoes, carrots, and cherries. Maple Syrup is also produced in Winconsin.
Most of the state experiences a warm summer, with the southern portion of Wisconsin experiencing a hot summer. Snow falls across the state in the winter, with the snow belt along Lake Superior received as much as 160 inches per year.
