Welcome to the 10th smallest state in the union. West Virginia became the 35th state in 1863, when those who wanted to stay in the union broke from their southern counterparts. West Virginia was the only state to from by breaking apart and was one of two states admitted to the Union during the Civil War. The state is one of the poorest in the county.
The New River Gorge Bridge is located near Fayetteville, West Virginia. The bridge is 876 feet high and is one of the tallest bridges open to vehicles in the world. The bridge design is a single span arch which stretches 1,700 feet across the gorge. Completed in 1977, the bridge cut travel time through the gorge by 45 minutes.
West Virginia is dotted with a number of Universities, community colleges, and technical schools.
There are no major league sports teams located with the state; however, there are professional minor league football, soccer, ice hockey, and baseball teams in West Virginia.
The economy in West Virginia has been hit hard by two things – automation and the shift away from the use of coal in the production of electricity. Higher paying manufacturing and mining jobs are being replaced by work in healthcare and the service industry.
West Virginia’s major crops are hay, apples, corn, soybeans, tobacco, peaches and wheat. Hay is the number one crop and is used the feed live stock. In addition, sheep and their wool, hogs, and honey are produced in the state.
Saltpeter, limestone, salt and coal mining have been mined in West Virginia. Saltpeter was sold to the federal government for use in making munitions. Limestone was used is building products and agriculture. Salt production has waned over the years, but companies like J.Q. Dickinson still mine and sell salt to the public.
Coal mining caused railways to build in West Virginia and spurred countless other industries to support the miners and their families. Today, the coal produced in West Virginia powers electric generation in many states.
