Washington State acquired its name to honor the first president of the United States, George Washington. This state was part of the Oregon Country that was visited by Spanish, British and American explorers. The Oregon Treaty was established to set a boundary at the 49th parallel to prevent a war, and established the present day Canadian border. Washington was part of the Oregon Treaty. In 1848, the Oregon Territory which was comprised of Washington Territory, Oregon and Idaho was established. On November 11, 1889, Washington became the 42nd state of the United States.
Women were previously given the right to vote in 1883 in this state, but it was rescinded in 1887 due to the support women were giving the prohibition movement. Despite the setback for women, Washington is the first state to give women the right to vote in 1910.
