At the Frankfurt auto show in 1979, Volkswagen introduced the Jetta and production began in August. The first generation Jetta was assembled in Germany, Yugoslavia, Mexico and South Africa. Volkswagen offered several engines for the Jetta including 1.1L I4, 1.3L I4, 1.5L I4, 1.6L I4, and 1.8L I4 gasoline engines and 1.6L I4 diesel and 1.6L I4 turbo diesel engines. The second generation included the longest running Jetta and was called the Mark 2 series. This second generation of Jetta was considered to be a huge sales success. Some considered it to be North America’s best-selling European car. This generation of Jetta’s platform was larger and heavier. Dimensions increased everywhere: length, wheelbase and width. The second generation lasted from 1984 until 1992.
Volkswagen discontinued the Jetta name in the third generation for European market but kept the name in North America. In the fourth generation, most of the world knew the Jetta as the “Bora”. This fourth generation saw an addition of a diesel engine called the “Pump Duse” unit injector. This injected fuel directly into the combustion chamber. Volkswagen offered several engines for the Jetta in the fourth generation including 1.4L I4, 1.6L I4, 1.8L I4 turbo, 2.0L I4 and two 2.8L VR6 gasoline engines and 1.9L I4 SDI and 1.9L I4 TDI diesel engines. The fourth generation of the Jetta lasted from 1999 until 2006.
