First Generation (1979–1984)

At the Frankfurt auto show in 1979, Volkswagen introduced the Jetta and production began in August. The first generation Jetta was assembled in Germany, Yugoslavia, Mexico and South Africa. Volkswagen offered several engines for the Jetta including 1.1L I4, 1.3L I4, 1.5L I4, 1.6L I4, and 1.8L I4 gasoline engines and 1.6L I4 diesel and 1.6L I4 turbo diesel engines. Transmissions consisted of 2 manual versions: the 4-speed and 5-speed and 1 automatic version: 3-speed. The first generation lasted from 1979 until 1984.

Second Generation (1984–1992)

The second generation included the longest running Jetta and was called the Mark 2 series. This second generation of Jetta was considered to be a huge sales success. Some considered it to be North America’s best-selling European car. This generation of Jetta’s platform was larger and heavier. Dimensions increased everywhere: length, wheelbase and width. The second generation lasted from 1984 until 1992.

Third Generation (1992–1999)

Volkswagen discontinued the Jetta name in the third generation for European market but kept the name in North America. Volkswagen offered several engines for the Jetta in the third generation including 1.6L I4, 1.8L I4, 2.0L I4, and 2.8L VR6 gasoline engines and 1.9L I4 D, 1.9L I4 TD, 1.9L I4 SDI and 1.9L I4 TDI diesel engines. Transmissions consisted of a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed automatic version. The third generation lasted from 1992 until 1999.

Fourth Generation (1999–2006)

In the fourth generation, most of the world knew the Jetta as the “Bora”. This fourth generation saw an addition of a diesel engine called the “Pump Duse” unit injector. This injected fuel directly into the combustion chamber. Volkswagen offered several engines for the Jetta in the fourth generation including 1.4L I4, 1.6L I4, 1.8L I4 turbo, 2.0L I4 and two 2.8L VR6 gasoline engines and 1.9L I4 SDI and 1.9L I4 TDI diesel engines. The amount of transmission offers increased, consisting of a 5-speed manual, a 6-speed manual, a 4-speed automatic, a 5-speed automatic and a 6-speed automatic version. The fourth generation of the Jetta lasted from 1999 until 2006.

Fifth Generation (2005–2011)

Volkswagen introduced the fifth generation Jetta in the Los Angeles auto show. Volkswagen now offered many engines for the Jetta in the fifth generation including 1.6L I4, 1.6L I4 FSI, 2.0L I4, 2.0L I4 FSI, 2.5L I5, 1.4L I4 TSI, 1.8L I4 TSI, 2.0L I4 TFSI and two diesel engines: a 1.9L I4TDI PD and a 2.0L If TDO CR. Transmissions offered were a 5-speed manual, a 6-speed manual, a 6-speed automatic, a 6-speed semi-automatic and a 7-speed semi-automatic version. The fifth generation lasted from 2005 until 2011.

Sixth Generation (2011–2017)

The sixth generation is lasting from 2011 until 2017.
