Utah become the 45th state in 1896. The state is unique in that more than half the population reports they are member of a single religion, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The church is responsible for the settlement of the area; however, the Church’s belief in and the practice of polygamy hampered its ability to become a state. The Church banned polygamy in 1890, but before the territory was admitted to the Union, the ban had to be written into the state constitution.
The state has a number of colleges and universities. Brigham Young University (BYU) in Provo, Utah, was established in 1875. BYU is owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and its student body is predominately made up of church members. The private university has a dress code and does not allow the student body to consume alcohol, take illegal drugs or engage in premarital sex. The honor code closely follows the teachings of the Church.
