Toyota introduced the Toyota Yaris as a subcompact car in 1999. Toyota considers the Toyota Starlet and Toyota Tercel as the Yaris predecessors. First Generation (1999 to 2005)

The production of the Toyota Yaris started in 1999 for the first generation along with the model year. All assembly has taken place in Japan, China, Indonesia, Philippines, Taiwan and Thailand. Since birth, the Yaris body styles have consisted of a two door coupe, a four door sedan, a three door hatchback and a five door hatchback. In this first generation of the Toyota Yaris, it was also called “Echo” in some markets.

Second Generation (2005 to 2013)

The second generation of the Yaris lasted nine years for Toyota. This Yaris generation has been produced for models 2005 through 2013. All models throughout the world was called the Yaris during this generation. Both sedan and hatchback models were available in this generation as well.

Third Generation (2011 to present)

The third generation of the Toyota Yaris saw only two body styles offered including a five door hatchback and a four door sedan. Toyota Yaris also saw major increases in engine options and transmissions during this generation. This generation of the Toyota Yaris included five different engines; including a 1.2L, a 1.3L and three (3) different 1.5L versions. While Toyota is seeing a decrease in North American sales, it is seeing an increase in sales in some markets.
