Toyota 4Runner History

Japanese manufacturer Toyota introduced the 4Runner in 1984, first as a compact sport utility vehicle, then later as a mid-size sport utility vehicle. The 4Runner layout offers a front engine, rear-wheel drive and a front engine, four-wheel drive. The Toyota 4Runner is sold in the Bahamas, Canada, Central America, Chile, Ecuador, Peru and the United States. Prior to the first generation Toyota 4Runner, its predecessor was called the Toyota Trekker. The Trekkers body style was a 2-door pickup and was produced from 1981 until 1983. All Toyota 4Runners have been assembled in Japan.

First Generation (1995–1998)

The first generation of the Toyota 4Runner was also called a Toyota Hilux Surf and a Toyota Hilux 4Runner. It had a body style of a 3-door wagon; basically a pickup with a fiberglass shell. This generation consisted of production years and model years of 1984 to 1989. There were many different engines offered in this generation including a 2.0L I4, a 2.4L I4, a 2.4L I4 turbo, a 3.0L V6, a 2.4L diesel I4 and a 2.4L turbo diesel I4. Transmissions available included a 4-speed automatic and a 5-speed manual.

Second Generation (1999–2003)

In the second generation, the Toyota 4Runner was related to the Toyota pickup, the Toyota Hilux, the Toyota Tacoma, the Toyota Land Cruiser and the Toyota T100. In addition to the 3-door wagon, it had a new body style of a 5-door wagon. This generation consisted of production years of 1989 to 1995 and model years of 1990 to 1995. A couple of new diesel engines were added in this generation including a 2.0L I4, a 2.2L I4, a 2.4L I4, a 3.0L V6, two 2.4L turbodiesel I4, a 2.8L diesel I4 and a 3.0L turbodiesel I4. Transmissions available included remained the same; a 4-speed automatic and a 5-speed manual.

Third Generation (2004–2008)

The third generation lasted from 2004 until 2008.

Fourth Generation (2009–2014)

The fourth generation lasted from 2009 until 2014 and offered four gasoline engines and one turbodiesel engine.

Fifth Generation (2015–present)

The fifth generation of the Toyota 4Runner model started in 2010, with production starting in 2009.
