Built on the banks of the Colorado River, Austin is a city you just have to experience. Federal, state, county and city governments, major universities and influential tech companies dominate the skyline, while entrepreneurs, artisans and musicians line the streets. The amalgamation of these pieces, both large and small, create a city fabric like no other. "Keep Austin Weird" was a slogan designed to promote and protect small, unique, and local businesses from being overrun by large corporations, but the slogan works for the city as a whole.
Austin is home to Public Broadcasting's longest running program, Austin City Limits. The TV concert series was first broadcast from KLRU on the campus of The University of Texas in 1976. This legendary program spawned the Austin City Limits Music Festival, which is held on two 3-day weekends in October, and helped give rise to Austin's official slogan, "The Live Music Capital of the World".
The University of Texas is located downtown just a few blocks north of the Texas State Capitol building. The red granite capitol building was completed in 1888, and a four-story $75 million underground extension was completed in 1993. The entire capitol complex sits on a hill in the middle of downtown from which the city flows down and out in all directions.
The downtown area is high-rise, high density living. The Sixth Street Historic District has been popular entertainment district since the 1970s.
Downtown quickly gives way to lower density housing options in all directions. Just south of downtown lies Lady Bird Lake, Ann W. Richards Congress Avenue Bridge and Congress Avenue Historic District. Austin new-comers and tourists flock to the bridge from March to September to watch a colony of approximately 1.5 million Mexican Free-tailed Bats fly off for their nightly feeding. It's an awesome experience!
