Charlotte, North Carolina, has several nicknames. The nickname "The Hornet's Nest" was coined for the city during the American Revolutionary War. British General Charles Cornwallis was driven out of Charlotte by, what he called, hostile residents during the American Revolutionary War. The General wrote that the city "a hornet's nest of rebellion". The designation stuck with the city and the local National Basketball Association's team pays homage to the city's heritage by using the name the Charlotte Hornets.
The nickname "The City Of Churches" came about in the 1800s when Baptist, Methodist, Episcopalian, Lutheran, Roman Catholic and Presbyterian churches sprang up in Charlotte. These religious roots help to explain the rise of Charlotte-born Billy Graham, the American evangelical preacher who, according to his staff, brought more than 3.2 million people to Jesus Christ.
The "Queen City" was the nickname given to the city because Charlotte was named after King George III's wife, Charlotte Sophia. This nickname is still in use today.
Old southern charm mixes with modern day life in Charlotte, the Queen City, today. The city beckons tourist and newcomers to experience a character that is "captivating, colorful and cosmopolitan." What you call Downtown, Charlotte calls Uptown because Uptown is the highest elevation point in the city. Uptown is home for Fortune 500 companies, shops, restaurants, ballet and theater.
Round town you can watch the National Football League's 29th team franchise, the Carolina Panthers, playing football in Bank of America Stadium. Or head out to the Charlotte Motor Speedway for the NASCAR Sprint Cup races and the NASCAR All-Star Race, but be warned, Charlotte is obsessed with NASCAR.
The best part about Charlotte may be that you are moving to one of the most affordable cities in the United States. Housing and rents are reasonable leaving you lots of disposable income to spend on the town.
