Nissan Sentra History

Nissan first started manufacturing the Sentra in 1982 and has grown larger throughout the years. It began as a subcompact car, then a compact car and now if considered a midsize car due to its’ interior volume. In other countries, the Nissan Sentra is also called the Nissan Sunny, Nissan Slyphy, Nissan Tsuru and the Nissan Pulsar.

First Generation (1982–1986)

The first generation of the Nissan Sentra had four different body styles including a 2-door coupe, 3-door hatchback, 4-door sedan and a 5-door station wagon. Its’ layout was a front engine with front-wheel-drive. The available engines were a 1.5L I4 and 1.6L I4 gasoline, and a 1.7L I4 diesel engine. Available transmissions included a 4-speed manual, a 5-speed manual and a 3-speed automatic. The first generation lasted from 1982 until 1986.

Second Generation (1985–1990)

The second generation of the Nissan Sentra saw an increase in the amount of body styles and a huge increase in available engines. There were five different body styles including a 2-door coupe, 3-door hatchback, 4-door sedan, 5-door station wagon and a 2-door sport coupe. Its’ layout was a front engine with front-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive. The available gasoline engines were a 1.4L I4, 1.6L I4 E16s, 1.6L I4 E16i, 1.6L I4 GA16s, 1.6L CA16DE, 1.7L I4 and a 1.8L I4. Available transmissions included a 4-speed manual, a 5-speed manual and a 3-speed automatic. The second generation lasted from 1985 until 1990.

Third Generation (1990–1995)

The third generation saw Nissan cutting back on the number of body styles and engines available in the Sentra. There were only two different body styles including a 2-door coupe and a 4-door sedan. The available gasoline engines were a 1.4L I4, 1.6L I4 E16, 1.6L GA16DE and a 2.0L I4. The third generation lasted from 1990 until 1995.

Fourth Generation (1995–1999)

The fourth generation had only one body style which was a 4-door sedan. The available gasoline engines were a 1.6L GA16DE and a 2.0L I4. The fourth generation lasted from 1995 until 1999.

Fifth Generation (2000–2006)

The fifth generation had only one body style which was a 4-door sedan. The available gasoline engines were a 1.6L I4, a 2.0L I4 and a 2.5L I4. The fifth generation lasted from 2000 until 2006.

Sixth Generation (2007–2012)

The sixth generation had only one body style which was a 4-door sedan. The available gasoline engines were a 2.0L I4 and a 2.5L I4. The sixth generation lasted from 2007 until 2012.

Seventh Generation (2013–present)

The seventh generation had only one body style which was a 4-door sedan. The available gasoline engines were a 1.6L I4, a 1.8L I4 and a 2.0L I4. The seventh generation lasted from 2013 until present.
