Buffalo has an amazing history in addition to an amazing view of Niagara Falls.
Buffalo streets were laid on out like wagon wheel spokes in a fashion similar to that found in Washington D.C., and why not? The two cities were both designed by Joseph Ellicott, a surveyor and city planner. Millard Fillmore must have felt at right at home when he moved from Buffalo to Washington, D.C. to take his place as the 13th President of the United States.
Frederick Law Olmsted also designed parks and green space in both Buffalo and Washington, D.C. The park system Olmsted designed in Buffalo is still intact. Three quarters of the city’s park land is a part of Olmsted design and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The park system in Buffalo is run by a non-profit corporation called the Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy.
Buffalo was home to another of America’s great designers. Frank Lloyd Wright got his start in Buffalo. Wright designed six homes in Buffalo, including the Martin House which introduced the horizontal bands of windows, which would become a prominent feature in his later houses.
In 1901, Buffalo had more millionaires per capita than any other city in the world thanks to a booming industrial complex and was home to a World’s Fair. The opening of the Saint Lawrence Seaway in 1959 lead to a decline of manufacturing which crushed the city’s economy. By 2008, Buffalo’s population was cut in half and the postindustrial society left the city with boarded-up building and weed infested vacant lots.
The city’s architecture is the backdrop to Buffalo’s economic recovery. Millennials who can brave the snow are finding Buffalo a very affordable and interesting place to live. What better way to end your day than picking you spot on the one of the many waterways that surround Buffalo, opening a locally brewed beer and watching the sunset in a town you will help make a comeback?
OH! Don’t forget to bring along some original Buffalo Wings from the Anchor Bar!
