If you are reading this, the thought of moving from New York to California has crossed your mind. Or at least traveling to California is your motive. So what are the perks of living in California, if even temporarily? Is it really better? Let us help you uncover some of the perks for moving to the Golden State of California! Regardless of why you are looking for an auto transport company to move your vehicle to California, you are looking forward to the warmer, sunny weather. If for no other reason, you only have the desire, we can agree that digging your vehicle out of the snow is a great reason to move to California!
Climate, Climate, Climate – Let’s face it. If you love the sun and warmer air, California beats most other states hands down. In addition, you are within a day’s driving distance to visit the redwood forests of Sequoia National Park, the vineyards of Napa Valley, the mountains of the Sierra Nevada, the rocky shores or sunny beaches of Southern California or the pristine deserts of the Mojave Desert. You can have a different “daycation” every weekend.
Swimming Pools, Movie Stars – You don’t have to live next door to the Beverly Hillbillies to rub elbows with Hollywood stars. Who wouldn’t want to run into Jennifer Aniston at the local Safeway? You may not run into celebrities on a daily basis, but you do increase your chances significantly. They’re people too.
Employment – While California’s unemployment rate is at 8.7 percent (US Department of Labor for October 2013), California is not lagging in the creating and maintaining employment for the job market. The California economy provides employment for approximately 18 million (non-military) Californians that draw a W-2. Countless more are contract workers or agricultural. The projections for job growth are at 10 percent for the next six years.
Cost of living – The median household income in California is $59,000, which is above the national average of $50,000. Even with the real estate boom, houses in California are cheaper than in New York. The recent recession has dropped the price of housing over the past few years. The median price of a home is $246,000 and the time on the market is forty-five (45) days, which is the industry standard across the nation.
Taxes – California is known for its high state sales tax (at 7.5 percent). New York’s taxes are across the board more subject to changes and regulation, making it much harder to predict. The laws are not in favor of homeowners with the property taxes five or six times higher as other states. The tax burdens vary by county, city, etc. In general, the counties with the highest tax burdens tend to be in New York and New Jersey, with all but three of the top 25 counties being from these two states. California ranks 15th highest nationally in property taxes.
City living – When it comes to living near the conveniences of living in or near the city, when it comes to California cities, pick your flavor. You can live in San Diego, where the sun, sand and sea are in (or near) your backyard, or San Francisco, labeled an “Urban Paradise”. Redondo Beach is ranked the Best City in California. It is located in Los Angeles County, near enough to Los Angeles to be close to anything and everything you or your family will need.
Family-Friendly – Raising a family in California is not only doable, there are many cities that are family-friendly. There are many areas that have great schools, affordable housing and low crime rates. According to Best Life magazine, the cities that top the list are San Diego, CA (#5), Santa Rosa, CA (#10), Los Angeles, CA (#12), Corona, CA (#13), South Bay Area, CA (#22) and Oceanside, CA (#27). Best Life compared factors such as favorable student-teacher ratios, above-average test scores, museums, parks, commute time, and cost of housing.
Before you move, you should know one thing. There are approximately 38 million people living in California, it is the most populated state in the United States. Overall, New York State has approximately 19.5 million. Of course, if you are moving from New York City, that’s not an issue for you since NYC has 8.3 million of that number living on the island of Manhattan. If you are a people person, you will be fine. If you prefer not to see another human being for months, you may have to rethink your strategy or move to Alpine County, deep in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. As of 2010, it had a population of 1,175, all rural inhabitants as there is no incorporated city. If you moved to avoid cold weather, Death Valley Junction located in the Mojave Desert may be a better match. It is located on the California/Nevada border just east of Death Valley National Park. It has a population of fewer than 20 inhabitants. Death Valley has the hottest air temperature ever recorded on the earth at 134 degrees (F) on July 10, 1913. If neither extreme appeals to you, it is best to accept crowded commutes to and from work and arrange your schedule accordingly.
