A little about Las Vegas:
Brief History

Las Vegas was founded in 1905 and incorporated in 1911. Almost immediately, divorce laws were liberalized in Nevada, and a "quickie" divorce could be obtained after six weeks of residency. Short-term residents stayed at "dude ranches" which ultimately gave way to hotels along the Las Vegas Strip. Then, in 1931 Nevada legalized gambling, and, ba-da-bing, ‘Vegas was born.

Along came the construction of the Hoover Dam and all the workers naturally needed some place to relax and enjoy themselves. Then, the outbreak of World War II brought the defense industry and Nellis Air Force Base. The defense industry continues to employ a significant number of valley residents.

The boom after World War II brought resort hotels with lavish decors to Las Vegas. The hotels offered open-all-night gambling casinos and top-name entertainers. Tourism and entertainment took over as the largest employer in the valley. Later in the 1950s, topless Showgirls debuted on the Strip with "Minsky's Follies." And in 1959, the world famous "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas" sign was created by artist Betty Willis.

Since then, Las Vegas has grown to become one of the world’s most popular destinations, drawing millions of tourists to Nevada every year. Gambling, lavishly produced shows, ultra posh hotels and five star restaurants abound up and down and surrounding the renowned Strip. And the growth of all that tourism brought along with it a huge influx of new residents to take their places in the jobs created by the hospitality and gaming industries.

McCarran Airport serves the city and the Strip with hundreds of flights from virtually every major US city. No need to have a car because the abundant cabs stand ready to take you anywhere you want to go. Las Vegas is a city famous for entertainers who pretend to be other entertainers and buildings that pretend to be other buildings—the Eiffel Tower, The Empire State Building, The Chrysler Building and The Statue of Liberty all have replicas in Las Vegas, making Fabulous Las Vegas one of the truly unique cities in all the world.

Demographics and Climate

Today, the city of Las Vegas has a population of half a million, and Clark County numbers 2 million. With a median age of 35.9 , Las Vegas is a relatively young population with a median income of $54,255 according to the 2010 census. One of the most appealing things about Las Vegas is its 294 days of sunshine per year, and with an average maximum temperature of 80 degrees, except for the brutally hot summer, ‘Vegas is a great place to vacation almost year ‘round. The City has 72 Publicly Maintained Parks and 235 Privately Maintained Parks as well as 14 golf courses and 12 Public swimming pools. Crime is low, schools are good and housing costs are low.
