Mazda3 History

Mazda first started manufacturing the Mazda3 in 2003 for the 2004 model year. In 2008, the Mazda3 sedan showed in the Los Angeles Auto Show and the hatchback showed in the Bologna Auto Show. The engine layout is a front-engine, front-wheel drive and a front-engine all-wheel drive.

First Generation (2003–2009)

The first generation of the Mazda3 had 2 different body styles including a 5-door hatchback and 4-door fastback sedan. The Mazda3 consisted of seven different engines including a 1.4L MZR I4, 1.5L MZR I4, 1.6L MZR I4, 2.0L MZR I4, 2.3L MZR I4, 1.6L MZ-CD I4 and a 2.0L MZR-CD I4; all gasoline engines. Available transmissions included a 5-speed manual, a 6-speed manual, a 4-speed automatic and a 5-speed automatic. The first generation lasted from 2003 until 2009.

Second Generation (2008–2013)

The second generation of the Mazda3 saw some added diesel engine options. There were 2 different body styles including a 5-door hatchback and 4-door fastback sedan. The available gasoline engines were a 1.6L I4, 2.0L I4, 2.3L I4 and a 2.5L I4; while the diesel engines included a 1.6L I4, a 2.0L I4 and a 2.2L I4. A new transmission was added for this generation and available transmissions included a 5-speed manual and a 6-speed manual and a 4-speed automatic, 5-speed automatic and a 6-speed automatic. The second generation lasted from 2008 until 2013.

Third Generation (2014–present)

The third generation saw Mazda cutting back on the number of engines and transmissions available in the Mazda3. There were still two different body styles including a a 5-door hatchback and 4-door fastback sedan. The available gasoline engines were a 1.5L I4, 2.0L I4 and a 2.5L I4; while the turbo diesel engines included a 1.5L I4 and a 2.2L I4. The third generation lasted from 2014 until present.
