Second Generation (1988–1993)

The second generation of the Sonata was produced from 1998 until 1993. The amount of available engines increased to include a 1.8 SOHC, a 2.0 110PS, a 2.0L I4, a 2.4L I4 and a 3.0 L V6. The two available transmissions were unchanged.

Third Generation (1993–1998)

In the third generation, Hyundai decreased the amount of engines available in the Sonata to just three. The engines include a 1.8L I4, a 2.0L I4 and a 3.0L V6. The two available transmissions were unchanged.

Fourth Generation (1998–2005)

Production of the fourth generation saw Hyundai making a facelift on the Sonata. Sonatas were produced in South Korea (1998 to 2005), Russia (2005 to 2012) and China (2002 to present). The engines available include a 2.0L I4, a 2.4L I4, a 2.5L V6 and a 2.7L V6. The two available transmissions were unchanged.

Fifth Generation (2004–2009)

The fifth generation saw an increase in the amount of transmissions offered in the Sonata. Transmissions included a 4-speed automatic, a 5-speed manual, a 6-speed manual and a 5-speed automatic. Engines available in the Sonata included a 2.0L I4, a 2.4L I4, a 3.3L V6 and a 2.0L CRDi I4.

Sixth Generation (2009–2014)

The sixth generation Hyundai Sonata was produced for model years 2010 through 2014. Transmissions available were reduced back to two; including a 6-speed automatic and a 6-speed manual.

Seventh Generation (2014–present)

The seventh generation Hyundai Sonata consisted of production years 2014 to present, but model years 2015 to present. Transmissions included a 6-speed automatic and a new 7-speed dual clutch automatic.
