In 1948, the first generation of the Ford F-Series pickup trucks was introduced. This was considered a replacement for the car-based pickup. This F-Series consisted of several trims and types including conventional truck, cab-over engine, pickup, panel truck and school bus. The first generation lasted from 1948 until 1952.
A new version of F-Series was made in the second generation starting in 1953. Notable changes in engines, overall size and chassis were added. This generation started Ford’s naming convention for the F-Series starting with the F-100. The second generation lasted from 1953 until 1956.
The third generation saw the F-Series become modernized with a complete redesign. Ford discontinued the cab-over F-Series in this generation and started producing four-wheel drive vehicles. The hood no longer included the front fenders; now they were part of the body. The third generation lasted from 1957 until 1960.
In the fourth generation, Ford made a major change to the body style. Ford added a new engine and gearbox and a larger body. A redesign came toward the end of this generation including a new twin I-beam front suspension. In 1965 Ford also introduced the Ranger. It was the smallest of the F-Series pickup trucks. The fourth generation of the F-Series lasted from 1961 until 1966.
More engine options came in the fifth generation as well as more trim options. All F-Series suspension parts were interchangeable starting in 1969. The fifth generation lasted from 1967 until 1972.
