The model years for the first generation Ford Explorer were 1991, 1992, 1993 and 1994. Ford only offered one engine for the first generation of the Explorer, which was a 4.0L V6. There were two different transmissions available including a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed automatic.
In the second generation, Ford produced the 5-door Explorer during model years 1995 to 2001 and the 3-door Explorer from 1995 until 2003. Ford also increased the amount of available engines to three including a 4.0L OHV V6 (1995-2000), a 4.0L SOHC V6 (1997-2003) and a 5.0L OHV V8 (1996-2001). Ford also increased the amount of transmissions available including two 5-speed manual, two 4-speed automatic and a 5-speed automatic. The engine layout was a front-engine, rear-wheel drive and also a four-wheel drive.
In the third generation, Ford only produced the Explorer in a 5-door SUV body style. The production years for this third generation was 2000 through 2005 and the model years were 2002 to 2005. A new layout was added as an all-wheel drive. Engines included the 4.0L V6 and the 4.6L V8. Transmissions included a 5-speed manual and two 5-speed automatics.
The fourth generation dropped the all-wheel drive Explorer. Only automatic transmissions were available in the Explorer in the fourth generation, dropping the 5-speed manual transmission. The Ford Explorer Sport Trac and the Mercury Mountaineer were considered as “related” vehicles to the Ford Explorer.
The fifth generation of the Ford Explorer changed from an SUV to a 5-door Crossover/CUV. This was a major change for the Ford Explorer. The layout was also changed drastically from a rear-wheel drive to the front engine, front wheel drive and an all-wheel drive version. The Ford Flex and the Lincoln MKT were considered as “related” vehicles to the Ford Explorer in this fifth generation.
