A little about Miami:

Fresh air, sunshine, and sandy beaches await you in Miami, but there is much more to this city than what the tourist sees. Those moving to Miami might wish they had paid more attention in Spanish class. When Castro came to power in Cuba in 1959, many Cubans fled to Miami. The city is heavily influenced by Cuban and other Latin American cultures. The population is about 70% Hispanic and says they speak only Spanish at home.

Miami is home to the National Hurricane Center and the United States Southern Command, which oversees operations in Central and South America. The city is a major center for international business and banking. American Airlines has their Latin American base of operations in Miami, as do Kraft Foods, WalMart, Microsoft and hundreds of other companies. This is the richest and one of the cleanest cities in the United States.

Traffic in Miami is brutal, so being on time for anything is difficult when traveling by car. The Mayor is known to close entire streets for various events, and if the Brickell Avenue drawbridge is up, you might as well get comfortable.

Miami is humid and hot so seeing locals in light jackets seems odd. Head into the office or your favorite bar or restaurant and you will find the air conditioner blasting out an artic chill to combat the heat. The afternoon heat may be broken up by a light shower or sea breeze but the humidity remains.

The rainy season begins is May. Much of the city’s 56 inch average rainfall occurs between May and November. Couple the rainy season with hurricane season, June through November, and flooding is sure to follow. If you are buying a house, make sure to ask your real estate agent about flood insurance.
