While the first generation of the production years for the Dodge Dart last from 1959 to 1976, the model years were 1960 until 1976. In 1968, a limited edition of the Dart came with a 426 HEMI engine. There were only 80 of these models made and were built for racing. Models in this first generation consisted of a two door sedan, a four door wagon, a four door sedan, a four door hardtop, a two door hardtop and a two door convertible. Engines offered included a 3.7L slant 6 and three V8’s. The two transmissions offered were the three speed manual and a three speed automatic.
The second generation was a short generation and only consisted of production years 1961 to 1962 for model year 1962. Though this generation had a new facelift, the actual body styles, engines and transmissions changed very little.
The third generation saw the Dodge Dart being assembled in California, Illinois, Michigan, Missouri of the United States and also in Spain and Argentina. A new 2.8L inline 6 engine was available and a new four speed manual transmission was added to the lineup.
The fourth generation saw a huge increase in the number of engines available. Included were three slant sixes and eight different V8’s from 4.5 liters to 7.2 liters. This generation lasted from 1967 until 1976.
