General motors introduced the second generation Chevrolet Malibu in 1968. The second generation of the Malibu saw a reduction in body types: 4-door sedan, 2-door hardtop and a 2-door convertible. The engine layout was a front-engine, rear-wheel drive.
In the third generation, Chevrolet redesigned the Malibu in 1973 model year. New models consisted of the Chevelle Deluxe and the Laguna.
Production of the fourth generation Chevrolet Malibu was started in 1978 and lasted until 1983. The body styles consisted of a 2-door coupe, a 4-door sedan and a 5-door station wagon. The engine layout was a front engine, rear-wheel drive and consisted of two transmission options; a 4-speed manual and a 3-speed automatic.
The fifth generation also saw a new version called Chevrolet Classic (2004-2005). Engines available in the Malibu and the Classic included a 2.2L I4, a 2.4L I4, a 3.1L L82 V6 and a 3.1L LG8 V6.
The sixth generation Malibu Classic had body styles including a 4-door sedan and a 5-door station wagon. There were two different 4-speed automatic transmission options.
The seventh generation Malibu was only offered in a 4-door sedan body style. This generation saw an increase in engines available including two different 2.4L I4 engines, a 2.4L hybrid engine, two different 3.5L V6 engines and a 3.6L V6 engine. Transmissions available was a 4-speed automatic and two different 6-speed automatic transmissions.
The eighth generation Malibu was built from 2013 until 2016.
The ninth generation Malibu includes turbo gasoline engines and a hybrid option. The ninth generation was built from 2016 until present.
