Chevrolet’s first-generation Camaro consisted of model years 1967 to 1969. It offered a rear-wheel drive, two-door coupe and convertible. You could choose between two inline-6 engines (3.8 L, 4.1 L) or several V8 power plants (4.9 L, 5.0 L, 5.4 L, 5.7 L, 6.5 L, 7.0 L). Chevrolet realized they did not have a competing car with the Ford Mustang. Hence the all new Chevrolet Camaro. With its rear-wheel drive and front-mounted engine, it could now compete in sales with the Mustang. The first generation ended in 1969.
The year 1970 saw the start of the second-generation Chevrolet Camaro. Major cosmetic changes happened in models 1974 and 1978. The SS package ended in 1972 but restarted in 1996. One highlight included the Z28 Camaro model that had an air induction hood scoop with an intake door that opened when under full throttle. The 1971 SS350 was selected as one of the 10 best cars in the world in Road & Track’s August edition. The second generation Camaro ended in 1981.
The third-generation Chevrolet Camaro was created in model year 1982. This is the year that Chevrolet first started offering fuel injection in the Camaro. Model years 1985 to 1990 included the IROC-Z (International Race of Champions). In 1987, Chevrolet offered the 20th Anniversary Commemorative Edition of the Camaro and in 1992 the 25th Anniversary Heritage Package. Model year 1992 was the end of Camaro’s third generation.
The fourth-generation Chevrolet Camaro was offered in 1993. From 1993 to 1995, the standard engine was a 3.4 L V6, followed by a 3.8 L V6 in 1995. All Camaros offered anti-lock brakes as standard equipment. Most of the Camaro SS models came with the 305 horsepower LT1, however a small quantity came with the 330 horsepower LT4 engine. Exterior styling changes came in 1998 and an upgraded interior was offered in 1997. The 5.7L LS1 was the first all-aluminum engine offered in a Camaro since the 1969 ZL-1 in 1998. In 2002, the Chevrolet Camaro came in a 35th Anniversary Edition. 2002 was the final year for the fourth generation and it was also the end of the Camaro until 2010.
The Chevrolet Camaro was back! It received a complete redesign based on the 2006 Chevrolet Camaro Concept car (and 2007 Convertible). The Camaro was named the World Car Design of the Year in April of 2010. The 45th Anniversary Edition of the Camaro came in 2012 and only offered “Carbon Flash Metallic” paint. The Z28 Camaro returned in 2013 at the New York Auto Show. 2015 marked the end of the fifth generation Camaro.
The 2016 Chevrolet Camaro was named Car of the Year by Motor Trend Magazine. Model year saw the 2017 Camaro’s 50th Anniversary.
Refinements in the front and rear fascia, provide a lower, more contemporary appearance. The front fascia features a wider, lower opening for improved cooling and aerodynamic efficiency. Even the exterior lighting system has been improved, with new for 2014 fog lamps that are separate from the daytime running lamps. The RS model now features rear LED lighting to match Camaro’s signature front Halo-ring headlamps. They’ll cut through the darkness and create a dramatic impression.
A sculpted deck lid, horizontal lamps and rear diffuser complete the powerful statement. But the changes aren’t just for appearances. The functional hood vent on the Camaro SS helps cool critical components and reduce aerodynamic lift. And there’s more inside the cockpit. Available on SS and ZL1 coupe models, you’ll find new performance seats from RECARO – a name synonymous with racing seats.
The available RS Package includes 20-inch Midnight Silver-painted aluminum wheels are standard, or you can opt for polished wheels. The high-intensity LED headlamps don’t just get the job done under the deepest cover of darkness, they also look sharp doing it. The fog lamps are separate from the daytime running lamps, which is new for 2014.
Not only does the Camaro Coupe’s LFX V6 boast 323 horses that will propel you from 0 – 60 in 5.9 seconds, on LT and 1LS models. It also offers impressive fuel efficiency: 30 MPG highway for the 6-speed automatic transmission 2LS. The dual overhead cam engine gives you heart-racing performance. Direct Injection and Variable Valve Timing combine to ensure fuel efficiency. This is a high-tech engine that delivers both power and efficiency. If unbridled power is what you’re after, the aluminum 6.2L LS3 in the Camaro SS offers 426 horsepower and 420 lb.-ft. of torque that cranks up performance to the next level.
The 6.2L V8, paired with the standard 6-speed manual transmission, offers 426 horsepower and 420 lb.-ft. of torque or downgrade to the high-tech combination of speed and efficiency of the 6-speed automatic transmission with Active Fuel Management technology. It offers 24 MPG highway and delivers 400 horsepower to the road.
The Launch control on the manual transmission SS helps control wheel spin for faster 0–60 sprints. TAPshift® manual controls, with steering wheel mounted controls, on the automatic transmission SS, give you command over the gear selection for an exhilarating sports car experience, while keeping the transitions smooth. The performance-tuned suspension with a finely tuned stabilizer bar and dampers provides an outstanding ride, balanced transitions, and excellent steering and handling. Pair it with the standard 20-inch wheels with Pirelli® PZero® ultra high summer-only performance tires† and Brembo® brakes for superior performance and control.
Every detail is designed to create an experience that’s comfortable and pleasurable. The all-new available RECARO Performance front bucket seats, with larger bolsters keep you confidently planted. Sueded microfiber details and dual stitching exude quality craftsmanship. Available with 1LE package, the flat bottom steering wheel provides increased leg room for heel/toe shifting and the refined instrument panel caters to drivers who want easy access to information so they can keep their eyes on the road. Also new for 2014 models is the available Blue Interior Accent Trim Package.
You’ll find more than just top-level response with Camaro’s steering wheel. Control audio functions with buttons right on the steering wheel. Plus, take advantage of the standard Bluetooth® wireless technology† for select phones that helps keep you connected while keeping your eyes on the road.
Standard on 2LT and 2SS, the color Head-Up Display (HUD) is specially designed for high-performance driving situations. The HUD presents performance data without requiring the driver to look away from the usual viewpoint. HUD displays speed, rpm and more — even your radio station — right on the windshield. You can even customize the display height and intensity to best help you stay on top of vital information while keeping your eyes on the road.
